As physicians increasingly perform in-office procedures, different approaches have been developed to manage patient comfort. It is important for any physician performing in-office procedures to be as prepared as possible with safety systems in place.
There are several different anesthesia protocols for your in-office practice. While Hologic does not make recommendations concerning which protocol to use, the following is a sample of Oral and IV treatment regimens used by other practices performing the NovaSure procedure in-office.
Northern Virginia Gynecologists
Day before procedure:
- Misoprostol 200 mcg, 2 tablets; insert vaginally at 6 PM and 11 PM to assist
in dilation of cervix
- 400 mg of ibuprofen, along with 11 PM dose
Day of procedure:
- 10 mg Valium® & Vicodin ES® at home before leaving for office
- Have patient arrive 1 hour before procedure; inject 60 mg Toradol® IM
- Paracervical block administered at 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock on cervix, 10 cc EACH
- WAIT 10 MINUTES BEFORE PROCEDURE
Tennessee Women’s Care
- Misoprostol dose and route are individualized per patient
- Midazolam 1 to 2 mg, Diprivan® 100 to 200 mg titrated to patient’s comfort,
and Toradol® 30 mg IV and 30 mg IM
*These anesthesia protocols reflect the general practice of these offices. They are for informational purposes only and do not represent an affirmative instruction as to which protocol to use for a particular patient or procedure. Hologic, Inc., makes no representation or recommendation regarding the use of a specific anesthesia protocol or regimen for a patient or procedure. The actual selection and use of an anesthesia protocol are at the sole discretion of the treating physician.
Care must be taken when setting up your office in order to effectively and safely perform the NovaSure procedure. The standard of care in the office setting should be no less than that of a hospital surgical unit.
